Attached is a revised calendar for the 2013-14 school year. This calendar was presented as a direct result of the rules and regulations promulgated by the IRS in relationship to the Affordable Health Care Act. This calendar will assist us when we calculate employee hours and will help prevent revenue being redirected from the classroom to health insurance benefits.
At the May school board meeting, the School Board deliberated over the pros and cons this calendar offers. There are two main disadvantages with this approach. The first is the timing since this replaces an earlier version and vacation plans may have already been scheduled. We will work with parents who have made plans that cannot be altered. The second is losing the first week of August to school.
The benefits include a two week break after each nine week grading period, professional development or Parent/Teacher Conference opportunities in October, less student regression of learned material over the summer, continued summer school offerings in June and built in make-up days in mid-March.
I understand that this change may be problematic, but I the benefits outweigh the negatives. If you have specific issues or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your building principal or Dr. Stephens.
